The Cygwin DLL has a console driver that emulates a Unix-type terminal within the Windows console. Cygwin's default person interface will be the bash shell jogging in the Cygwin console. The DLL also implements pseudo terminal (pty) units. Cygwin ships with many terminal emulators which can be based upon them, such as mintty, rxvt/urxvt, and xterm.
